This is “OUR” President!!

Posted by italco on May 17, 2009

“President Barack Obama strode head-on Sunday into the stormy abortion debate and told graduates at America’s leading Roman Catholic university that both sides must stop demonizing one another.Obama acknowledged that “no matter how much we want to fudge it … the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable.” But he still implored the University of Notre Dame’s graduating class and all in the U.S. to stop “reducing those with differing views to caricature.

Obama entered the arena to thunderous applause and a standing ovation from many in the crowd of 12,000. But as the president began his commencement address, at least three protesters interrupted it. One yelled, “Stop killing our children.” The graduates responded by chanting “Yes we can,” the slogan that became synonymous with Obama’s presidential campaign. Obama seem unfazed, saying Americans must be able to deal with things that make them “uncomfortable.”

The president ceded no ground. But he said those on each side of the debate “can still agree that this is a heart-wrenching decision for any woman to make, with both moral and spiritual dimensions. “So let’s work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions by reducing unintended pregnancies, and making adoption more available, and providing care and support for women who do carry their child to term.”

He said he favored “a sensible conscience clause” that would give anti-abortion health care providers the right to refuse to perform the procedure.”

President Obama does not shrink away from controversy or opposing views. Here is a man who will walk into a room where he knows there is oposition to his own veiws and still give value to those who opose him. What is there not to respect. He shows us respect. He shows respect to the conservatives, the republicans, the moderates, the liberals, the christians, the muslims, the jews, the athists, and the world.

That is what I voted for and that is what I expect.

It is ok to disagree and we should at least be able to reach consensus on that. We are all different people with differing cultures. We all have our own set of perceptions that are based on where we live and how we were/are raised.

We should all be able to get behind “our” president and put country first. The issues, we can work out and find compromises that are win/win for all sides.

This should be the expectation of all our leaders.

italco, glad to see you’re up and writing. I watched the commencement exercise and when the protester tried to disrupt, President Obama was a “class act.” Also, I noticed the same secret service agent sitting beside him who was also present during the train-ride to D.C. The look in that agent’s eyes are enough to burn a hole through you. 🙂

Hope to read more from you.

I was wondering when you were going to show up? I am very glad to see you writing. I was very impressed with the way he handled the hecklers. He truely is a class act.

providing care and support for women who do carry their child to term
This is the key. I don’t think there is ANY woman who really wants to abort her own flesh, but they rather choose to go through abortion as this appears to be their only choice.

I agree completely. Also, from what I understand, the Hispanic vote was a major influence in this election. Being Hispanic it sent chills up my spine. It was also my daughter’s very first time to vote. Because she doesn’t drive she walked well over a mile to cast her vote for the new President. I always feel that no matter what…get out and vote. Make it count….especially for being a woman I feel I have to because in other countries we women do not have the right to express our opinion and America sure did election day 2008.

It doesn’t get anymore patriotic than that. I applaude your daughter and salute you. You have obviously instilled the right stuff in her growing up.

It’s about time we had someone like him in office, someone who speaks in a straight-forward manner about really tough issues!! That’s the kind of dialogue we need, not more other-side-bashing.

I feel the same as you, I am so tired of the badgering and bickering. I am glad he doesn’t avoid the issues. I do believe he will continue to be respectful and continue to reach across. I hope we can all meet in the middle somewhere.

Wow…he spoke well and didn’t dodge what really matters. Thanks for posting this. I’m starting to think that debate will never happen! ; )

No worries there. Our swords are inevitably going to cross. I am a man, I will say the wrong thing eventually…lol
